Multiple Teams · Baseball Clinches Playoff Spot Despite 4-3 Loss to #1 Sparkman

#1 Sparkman (31-7) 4, #6 Bob Jones (29-13) 3:  Sparkman won a close one, 4-3, to take a 1-0 lead in the Area 8 Championship Series.  Bob Jones must sweep the doubleheader on Friday at 4:30 at Sparkman to be area champs.  Hazel Green lost earlier in the day which allowed Bob Jones and Sparkman to clinch playoff spots.  This is the first playoff appearance for Bob Jones since 2013.

Sparkman lived by the long ball and scored 3 of their 4 runs on two home runs.  The dagger was a 2 strike, 2 out solo homerun in the top of the 7th by Washington signee Brock Anderson to break a 3-3 tie.  Sparkman jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning after a single followed by a home run.  Sparkman would add one more after a hit batter scored on a 1 out single to make the lead 3-0.

Bob Jones would storm back in the bottom of the 3rd inning with 2 runs.  After 2 quick outs, Connor Daly singled, and Isaiah Walker drew a walk.  Garret Gillum followed with a single to leftfield to score Daly from 2nd base and cut the lead to 3-1.  Harrison Leach would then hit a groundball to the shortstop but would beat it out for an infield hit which scored Walker which made the score 3-2 Sparkman.

Ford Luttrell would draw a 1-out walk in the bottom of the 4th.  Luttrell scored when Trammell Shepherd hit a 2-out double off of the left field wall to tie the game at 3-3.  Bob Jones would never threaten again, and Sparkman would walk away with a close 4-3 victory after the Anderson homer.

Luke Whaley picked up the loss while pitching a complete game with 5 strikeouts.  Whaley gave up 4 runs on 9 hits, 1 walk, and 2 HBP.
