AL.com LogoBob Jones girls soccer coach Tony Schroeder was relieved after Tuesday night’s 2-1 Class 7A first-round playoff win at No. 8 Huntsville.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Schroeder said. “Huntsville had our number for many years. It is our first time to beat them in four years.”

Amina Downey took a ball off a Huntsville defender and scored with 2:05 remaining in the first half. That lead stood until the final five minutes of a game played mostly in a chilly drizzle. With 4:56 to go, Katie Bell made it 2-0 for the Patriots, scoring off a defection by Huntsville goalkeeper Laurie Graves. Emma Frances Thompson scored the Huntsville goal with 3:38 remaining, coming out of a scramble in front of the Bob Jones net. Bob Jones (13-7-1) advances to meet Sparkman on Friday in Harvest. Huntsville finished 14-6-1.

— Key moment: Bell’s follow-up goal that gave Bob Jones a 2-0 lead.

— Star of the game: Downey, Bob Jones’ freshman center/striker. She recorded her team’s first goal and assisted on the second.
— Quotable: “Tonight we played hard and for each other. They wanted it. We controlled the midfield better. We played a complete game.” — Schroeder.
“We really work as a team at practice. From the first minute tonight it was game on.” — Downey. “Every time against Huntsville it is neck-and-neck. We had ended up with losses (including a 3-0 defeat during the season).” — Avery Batson, Bob Jones.

“It has always been close in those four years. The first half Bob Jones had a little more energy than we did. At the end we were pushing to tie it.” — Huntsville coach Chris Crump.
