Dean has Big game.. Passing & Running

Coach O’Conner’s Lee High Generals came out and took it to Bob Jones in the 1st half of the Patriot’s season opener. The Patriots started strong by holding the Generals on their first possession. Ryan Somrack received the Lee High punt and moved the ball to the 27 yard line. Michael Dean then linked up with Elijah Smith on the first play from scrimmage on a 73 yard touchdown pass with 8:33 left in the 1st quarter. Bob Jones missed the PAT. The Generals responded marching 73 yards in 12 plays to score a touchdown and a successful extra point to put the Generals up 7-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter started with a good punt by Patriot Richard Gaiser and a fumble recovery by Phillip Williams. The Patriots moved the ball a little but had to punt again on a 4th and 10 play. After a couple of runs, Lee High broke a 83 yard touchdown run to put the Generals up 14-6. After the Patriots received the kickoff, the old tandem of Dean and Cooper kept the game close. Michael Dean connected with Chris Cooper on three passes, the last being a 44 yard touchdown reception. A missed 2-point conversion left the Patriots behind 14-12. The Generals got the ball back but a nice hit from Dustin Lauterbacker on a third and short play kept Lee High in check going in to halftime. The second half started with much more energy from the Bob Jones offensive and defensive lineman. After a failed on-side kick from the Patriots, the defense stuffed the Generals first two runs as Ryan Somrack intercepted a third and ten pass. Bob Jones immediately tested their energized offensive line with running plays using Caudle, Wallace, Dean, and finally Martin for the score that went 55 yards in 5 plays. A two-point conversion reception by Henry Townsend from Dean made the score 20-14 with 8:05 left in the third quarter. Lee High appeared to be getting tired when they fumbled the next kickoff and had to start their next drive from their own 10 yard line. The Generals ran three plays for short yardage before getting a punt attempt tipped giving the Patriots the ball on the Lee High 36 yard line. Michael Dean ran the ball on the next play for a 16-yard gain then again on the next play 20 more yards for another score. The two point conversion was no good, putting Bob Jones up 26-14. On the kick-off, a Lee High sprinter got loose down the sidelines but was issued a vicious touchdown saving hit by the “kicker”, Jeremy Field. The hit really seemed to fire up the Bob Jones players as the Patriot defense moved the Generals back. Bob Jones took over again after a Lee High punt and marched down the field again with some big runs from Max Martin. The fourth quarter started with a missed field goal attempt by Bob Jones, but the defense was ready to get back on the field. Lee ran the ball for three plays and punted again. The Patriots started their next possession from their own 49 yard line. The offensive line picked up the pace opening holes that led to nice runs by Michael Dean and Max Martin. Max finished the night after scoring again on 16-yard scamper into the end zone. With a successful PAT from the Patriots, the score was 33-14. Another deep kick-off by Jeremy Field put the Generals starting their next possession on their own 10 yard line. Lee moved the ball a little, but failed to convert on a third down and seven when Harmon Gage broke up a pass attempt. The Generals attempted a fake punt, which backfired when Dirk Caudle picked up a fumble to score the last points of the night for Bob Jones. The Generals scored a late touchdown against the Bob Jones second defensive squad. By John Parkes
