Max Martin breaks long runs to lead Patriots to victory

Bob Jones won the toss and decided to receive the ball to start the game. On the Patriots first possession they gained one 1st down but then had to punt on a 4th down and long. The Panthers took over at their 39 yard line and drove the ball down into Patriot territory before a batted Huntsville pass was caught by a Panther player and run into the end zone for the first score. On the following kickoff, Harmon Gage made a nice return out to the Patriot 40 yard line. On first down, Max Martin picked up 10 yards and then followed up on the next play with a 50 yard break away for the first Patriot score. The Panthers returned a deep kickoff from Chris Campbell out to their 32 yard line and proceeded to march down the field. The drive stalled at the Patriot 15 yard line where Huntsville attempted a 32 yard field goal that flew wide right. The unsuccessful drive lasted from late in the 1st quarter until about 11 minutes left in the half. On a missed field goal attempt in high school, the ball comes out to the opponent’s 20 yard line. After a four yard pickup on first down, Max Martin again broke away for another rushing touchdown. This run went for 74 yards. Campbell connected on his second successful extra point to make the score 14-7. The Panthers ran the kickoff out to their 30 yard line and again proceeded to march downfield with a good mixture of running and passing plays. Huntsville appeared to be stopped at the Patriot 22 yard line, but went for it on fourth down when Nast connected to Bonner on a 22 yard pass play for a score. Tie game. The Patriots once again returned the next kickoff for good yardage out to mid field and gained another 15 yards on a personal foul call against the Panthers. On first down, Chris Cooper had the Panther cornerback beat down field, when the corner committed a pass interference to save a touchdown. Bob Jones appeared to be on the verge of scoring again but three unsuccessful plays followed by a fourth down sack stop the drive. Huntsville took over on downs and moved the ball down to the Patriot 18 yard line where the Panthers connected on a 38 yard field goal with 2:07 left in the half. Bob Jones couldn’t mount any significant offense threat with little time remaining and entered halftime, down by three points.

Chris Campbell started the 2nd half with a kickoff into the end zone. Huntsville started from their 20 yard line and advanced the ball up the field aided by a long pass play. The Bob Jones defense turned up the heat on the next few plays highlighted by a blocked pass by Barrett Sullivan and big hit from Neal Bond. The Panthers punted the ball down to the Patriot 13 yard line. After a few unsuccessful offensive plays, the Patriots punted back to the Panthers, but the defense took over again. Huntsville tried to mount an attack but failed. They punted the ball back to the Patriots, giving them a starting point for their next offensive possession on the 49 yard line. A couple of nice runs by Max Martin and Michael Dean advanced the ball down the field which was aided by a 15 yard face mask penalty against Huntsville. On first down, Michael Dean kept the ball and sprinted down the sidelines 24 yards while stretching the last couple of yards over the goal line for the score. Campbell extra point kick was good. The next kickoff was returned by Huntsville to their 26 yard line as Chris Campbell pulled a muscle in his leg on the kick. Neal Bond had a sack on the first down play followed up by a huge blocked punt on fourth down which was recovered and advanced by Chris Enyinda for a Patriot score. The third quarter ended with Bob Jones on top 28-17. Huntsville started their fourth quarter possession with little fire left. The Patriot defense seemed to get stronger as the game continued. George Woods applied pressure on the Panther quarterback on the third down play causing an incomplete pass. Huntsville had no choice but to punt again to an excited Patriot offense. Max Martin broke another long run to help set up a 22 yard field goal by Chris Campbell to extend the lead by 14 points. Campbell nailed the next kickoff into the end zone still feeling pain in his kicking leg. The Patriot defense kept the heat up as they starting smelling a victory. Barrett Sullivan made a big hit on the Panther first down play while Adrian Wallace recovered a fumble on the second. George Woods was hurt on this set of downs and had to be loaded into the ambulance for further treatment at the hospital. All the players were very concerned with George’s injury but felt better when George raised his arm while being rolled on the stretcher. It is believed that George suffered a hit to the neck area which caused him to loose some feeling. We all noticed him moving his legs and arms after a few minutes. The players took the emotion of George’s injury and never looked back. Dirk Caudle scored the last touchdown on a 10 yard run and Coach Bates honored his graduating seniors field duty the rest of the way to bring it home. The Patriots improved their record to 5-5 after a 2-8 record last year. Coach Mike Bates and Staff have taken this program and made it very competitive. A huge thank you goes out to all graduating seniors who’s efforts will make this team very good next year. Bob Jones missed the playoffs this year by a couple of plays. With the number of starters returning next year, the future looks bright for BOB JONES FOOTBALL. By John Parkes
