Patriots Fall to Grissom in Region Contest

Bob Jones’s loss to Grissom knocked them out of the playoff picture but a win next week against Huntsville could give the Patriots a .500 (5-5) season. On the first play of the game, the Patriots kicked off to the Grissom Tigers and Dustin Lauterbacker made a strong tackle on Jayson Swain which injured his knee and took him out of the game. Swain never returned. Swain is one of the best players in the state and is being recruited heavily by Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, & Tennessee to name a few. The Tigers offense my have been without one of their best players but their big, strong linemen were feeling fine. The Tigers marched down the field on their first possession with strong running and a snappy passing attack but stalled out at the Patriot 6 yard line after a few good defensive plays by Barrett Sullivan. On fourth down, the Tigers attempted a 23 yard field goal but it sailed wide right. In high school, the ball is spotted on the 20 yard line after a missed field goal attempt. The Patriots start at their own 20, but on the first offensive play, Max Martin fumbles the ball and the Tigers recover. The Patriot defense comes back out and puts up a strong showing highlighted by Tim Goins batting down a Tiger pass on second down and Chris Enyinda knocking a pass away with tight coverage on third down. The Tigers attempt another field goal. This kick was from 35 yards out and ended the same as the first, wide right. Bob Jones came out on their second offensive possession throwing the ball but couldn’t move the first down chains. A long punt by Matt Sendrall on fourth down put the Tigers back to their own 25 yard line. The Tiger offensive line provided their quarterback with lots of time to throw as well as the running backs with good holes to run. After one dropped pass in the end zone, the Tigers ran the ball down to the Patriot 4 yard line where Pinyerd ran it in for the score. On the kickoff, Max Martin took the ball from almost the goal line out to the Bob Jones 38 yard line. Chris Cooper caught a nine yard pass from Michael Dean on first down to start the drive and Adrian Wallace picked up the needed 1st down on the next play. After three incomplete passes, the Patriots were forced to punt again and bring a tired defensive team back on the field. The Tigers started the next possession from their own 21 yard line but after a few plays had moved the ball over mid field. On a second and eleven play, the Tigers got a break when a thrown ball was tipped high into the air that they caught to pick up another first down. After a few running plays, the Tigers Kenney caught a nine yard pass for their second touchdown. The kick was good making the score 14-0, Tigers. The Grissom kickoff sailed into the end zone which brought the ball out to the Bob Jones 20 yard line with only seconds remaining in the half.

The second half started with Bob Jones receiving the kickoff which they ran out to the 31 yard line. The Patriots tried to throw the ball but two incomplete passes and a lateral that went out of bounds caused the Patriots to punt after three plays. The Patriot defense held the Tigers on the next set of downs and took the ball back on their own 25 yard line. A pass caught by Dominique Fredericks and run by Max Martin earned Bob Jones a first down which moved the ball out to the 46 yard line. The Patriots attempted another pass on second down, but Michael Dean was sacked hard for a loss and had to come out of the game. A.J. Jobin came in to replace Dean, and on the next play, his pass was picked off by the Tigers on the Patriot 33 yard line. Grissom ran the ball down to the 1 yard line and scored on the next play making the score 21-0. The next Patriot possession started on their own 12 yard line. A nice catch by Chris Cooper from Michael Dean moved the ball out to the 50 yard line. The Patriots failed to move on the next three plays and fumbled on a fourth and seven situation. The Tigers gave the ball right back with a fumble recovered by Ben DeHeve on a second down play. The fourth quarter started out with a couple of Patriot runs which failed to earn a first down forcing them to punt. The Tigers took over on their 43 yard line but gave the ball back again to the Patriots when Dirk Caudle picked off a Tiger pass. Michael Dean went to the air quickly connecting with Dominique Fredericks on a deep pass down to the Tiger seven yard line. Max Martin scored on a fourth and one play with 5:27 left in the game. Chris Campbell kicked an onside kick which the Patriots recovered but it was just short of the needed 10 yards to retain possession. The Tigers used their strong line the rest of the way to run out the clock for the victory. Bob Jones fought hard but couldn’t establish enough offense to match the Tigers. Grissom played well without Jayson Swain who we hope will be available for their next game. By John Parkes
