Patriot’s Kicking Game the Difference

Patriot place-kicker Chris Campbell kicked three field goals from 26, 42, & 40 yards along with 3 PATs to lift the Bob Jones Patriots over their arch rival Sparkman Senators. Patriot punter, Matt Sendrall, also kicked well averaging over 40 yards per punt including one for 58 yards. The game was riddled with 23 penalties including one player ejection against Bob Jones as well as three costly Sparkman turnovers. Sparkman won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. Sparkman marched down the field with strong running and crisp passing but failed to convert on a 4th down and one from the Patriot 40 yard line. Bob Jones ran three plays that failed to pick up a first down and decided to punt on 4th down and three. The Senators mishandled the punt and A. J. Jobin recovered the fumble on the Senator 15 yard line. On 2nd and nine, Michael Dean connected with Chris Cooper on a fade route for a 15 yard touchdown pass. On the Patriot kickoff, Sparkman’s Tim Johnson got loose around the end and dodged an attempt from the Patriot kicker to go 97 yards for the score. The Patriots started their next possession from their own 36 yard line. After a couple of running plays, Dirk Caudle, took a last second pitch from Michael Dean and scampered down the line 57 yards for the Patriot’s second touchdown. Bob Jones tried a short kick which gave the Senators the ball on their own 40 yard line. Sparkman took the ball down to the Patriot 30 to end the quarter. On the 2nd down and eleven attempt, Bob Jones was charged with a 15 yard personal foul penalty which gave the Senators 1st down and ten on the Patriot 15 yard line. On the next play, Sparkman was charged with a holding penalty but Bob Jones was also charge with another personal foul for an alleged uppercut to a Sparkman Senator from David Brown. This heavily disputed call from the Patriot coaching staff carried a game ejection penalty. After marking off the penalties, the Senators threw a pass down to the Bob Jones 5 yard line when Ricky Johnson punched it in for a touchdown on 2nd down and three. This touchdown, with 9:29 left in the half, tied the game 14 – 14. Bob Jones started their next drive from their own 45 yard line after the kick-off and a personal foul call against Sparkman. The Patriots marched down the field to the Senator 8 yard line with runs from Max Martin and Adrian Wallace and a pass reception by Chris Cooper. On 1st and eight, Max Martin broke three tackles and took it in for the score. Chris Campbell connected on his third PAT to make the score 21-14. Campbell?s next kick-off sailed into the end zone for a touch back. The Senators came out passing and connected on three to move into Patriot territory but a Senator personal foul moved it back to the mid-field point. After a couple of more plays, the Senators were penalized for an illegal block and an illegal procedure call. On 4th down and 25 yards to go, Sparkman punted the ball down to the Patriot 20 yard line, but after another personal foul by the Bob Jones return team, the Patriots started from their own 5 yard line. After a couple of quarterback keepers up the middle designed to run out the clock, the Patriots were faced with 4th and six play from their nine yard line. Another Patriot penalty bought the ball back five more yards but didn’t hurt the Patriots because Matt Sendrall launched a 58 yard punt out of his own end zone to put the Senators back to their own 38 with little time remaining in the half. Sparkman tried a couple of plays but were stopped well away from the enzone after a Ben DeHeve hit to end the half. The Patriot’s started the 3rd quarter with a delay of game penalty because the halftime show went too long. Bob Jones started on their own 15 and sputtered after a few plays and punted the ball away to the Senators. But only after one play, the Senators committed another turnover when Neal Bond recovered a Sparkman fumble. After a runs from Martin, Wallace, Caudle and pass reception by Cooper the Patriot’s failed to convert a 1st down on the Sparkman nine yard line. Chris Campbell then connected on a 36 yard file goal with 6:30 left in the quarter to make the score 24-14. After a short kick-off into the wind, the Senators answered by marching down the field on four plays aided by another Patriot personal foul penalty for the touchdown. Harmon Gage received the Sparkman kick-off and ran the ball out to the Bob Jones 40 yard line. The Patriots drove the ball down the field to the Sparkman 26 yard line to end the third quarter using the running game. To Patriots started the fourth quarter with a couple of good runs but a Patriot holding penalty stalled the drive on the Sparkman 25 yard line. Chris Campbell came in on 4th a nine and connected on a 42 yard field goal to put the Patriots up by six points. The Senators started their next possession from their own 20 after Campbell’s kick sailed into the end zone for another touch back. The Senators moved the ball out to their 43 yard line before an illegal block penalty made it 3rd down and 25 yards to go. On the third down play, the Senator quarterback’s pass was picked off by Dirk Caudle and brought back to the Bob Jones 36 yard line. The Bob Jones ground game took over at this point as the Patriots marched down the field to the Sparkman 18 yard line with runs by Martin, Dean, and Wallace. Bob Jones decided to go for it on 4th and one but an offensive movement penalty moved the ball back to the 23 yard line. Coach Mike Bates sent in Chris Campbell to attempt a 40 yard field goal. Campbell connected on his third attempt for the night to put the Patriots up by nine points with only 1:13 remaining. Campbell?s kick-off went into the end zone again putting the Senators at their 20 yard line. With only seconds remaining and only trick plays left, the Senators failed to score again. The Patriot fans rushed the field to congratulate the Bob Jones players for winning, for many, the biggest game of the year against arch rival Sparkman. By John Parkes
