Patriot’s Mistakes Too Costly
An Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty and two fumbles proved to be too costly for the Patriot’s attempt to beat Austin at home.
Bob Jones’s Thaddius Williams received the short opening kickoff from Austin on their own 42 yard line. The Patriots went 3 plays and had to punt. Austin started their first drive from their own 29. Austin moved the ball well mixing up the running game with short flair out passes to get down to the Patriot 5 yard line. The Patriots put up a strong goal line stand holding Austin on 4th and goal from the 1. The Patriots moved the ball out a little but still punted from their own end zone. Austin started their next drive on the 49 when on 2nd and five Dirk Caudle intercepted an Austin pass on the Austin 32 yard line. The Patriots ran a couple of plays then Michael Dean connected up with Chris Cooper with a nice grab. Clock ran out with no score in the 1st quarter.
The Bob Jones running game started picking up the runs from Max Martin, Dirk Caudle, and Michael Dean that took them down to the Austin 10 yard line with for a 2nd and 5 play. Max Martin ran down to the 5 yard line where he lowered his head to bowl over an Austin defender, TOUCHDOWN. The extra point from the returning Chris Campbell made the score Bob Jones 7, Austin 0 with 8:54 to go in the half. Chris Campbell drills the kickoff at least 7 yards deep in the end zone. Austin 1st and 10 from the 20. Austin moved the ball up to mid-field and on a 3rd and 1, the defense executed a stunt which made the Austin offense jump. Austin recovered and completed a pass to Austin’s #16 that Chris Enyinda barely stopped from going all the way. A big sack from David Brown and stop by Max Martin helped the Patriot’s force Austin to go for it on 4th and 5. Chris Enyinda came up big on a fine defensive play. Bob Jones 1st and 10 from their own 26. The Patriots went 3 plays and punted, but punted they did. Matt Sendral nailed a 54 yard punt putting Austin back to their 14 to start their drive. Austin again moved the ball capped by a big run from Austin that moved the ball out to the 43. After a few plays, Austin went for it on 4th and 6 from the Patriot 39 with 47 seconds left. Harmon Gage made a big defensive play tipping the ball away from the Austin receiver. Bob Jones ran the ball out to end the half. Bob Jones 7, Austin 0.
Chris Campbell kickoff to the 1 yard line but Austin ran it back to their 32 yard line. After a short pickup on 1st down, Barrett Sullivan recorded a sack and a third down pass was incomplete to setup what appeared to be a Austin punt. At this point, the Patriot’s committed a huge mental error which seemed to change the whole momentum of the game. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Bob Jones for yelling “Now” before the snap cost the Patriots a 15 yard penalty allowing Austin to keep the ball and start 1st and 10 on the Patriot 45. Austin moved the ball down to the Patriot 1 yard line with a good mixture of short passes and runs. Austin stuffed it in and made the extra point to make the score 7-7 with 6:01 left in the 3rd quarter. The Patriot’s received the kickoff on their own 22 but stalled after a brief drive on the 48. Matt Sendrall continued a good night punting putting the ball on the Austin 11 yard line. The Bob Jones defense looked good on the first few plays but on a 3rd and 4 play, Austin connected on a short pass in which the Austin defender shook on defensive back to all the way for a score. The kick was good, Austin 14, Bob Jones 7. A fair catch was called on the 32 yard line after the short Austin kickoff as the third quarter came to an end.
The 4th quarter started with lost fumble after a hurried pitch to our tailback. Austin took quick advantage of the turnover by connecting with a pass taking Austin down to the 1. Dirk Caudle made a bone crushing hit on the receiver at the one yard line but the receiver somehow held on. Austin punches it in but misses the extra point giving the Patriots a little hope. Austin again attempted the short kickoff in an effort to put pressure on the up man. Bob Jones started on their own 37. After a 12 yard run, Michael Dean connected with Henry Townsend for a long touchdown pass. Chris Campbell makes the extra point inching the Patriots within 6 of Austin. The kickoff went into the end zone to bring the ball out to the Austin 20. After a few plays which moved the ball up to mid field, Austin went for it on 4th and 1 and barely made it. The Patriot defense appeared to be getting tired but on a 3rd and 2 caused a fumble which Neal Bond recovered. After a short run, Michael Dean got loose up to the Austin 46 for a 1st and 10. On the next play, the Patriot’s fumbled again which really took the wind out of the sail. Austin broke a run after a few plays taking them down to the Patriot 7 yard line with only 1:26 left in the game. The Patriot’s put up a miraculous stand and got the ball back on downs with only 17 seconds left. The game ended on a pass to Ryan Somirak when time ran out.
The outcome of this game was very hard to accept. The Patriots played hard a good enough to win, but the big penalty and two late turnovers where just too big. By John Parkes
