Patriots Max Out Against John Carroll

The Patriot’s received the opening kickoff and marched down the field with a strong running attach along with a couple of passes to A.J. Jobin and Chris Cooper. Dirk Caudle finished the opening drive with a rushing touchdown. The Patriot defense then took the field and played well from the start. They held John Carroll on their first drive and got the ball back as the 1st quarter came to an end. BJ 7 – JC 0

The offense then marched again down to the 24 when Matt Sendral connected on a 34 Yard Field Goal. John Carroll started their next drive from their own 26 and managed to move the ball some up to the 40. Next, the Patriot defense gave up 1 of 2 big plays of the night on a 60 pass play for a John Carroll touchdown. John Carroll puts the kickoff in the end zone. Patriot’s 1st and 10 on the 20. A penalty for delay of game puts us back 5 more. Bob Jones started moving the ball when the momentum appeared to be shifting. The Patriots moved the ball down to the 15 on runs from Martin, Dean, and Caudle and pass to Cooper. We go for it of 4th and 6 with a Michael Dean play-action play, but couldn’t convert. John Carroll took over on the 15 but struggled after a few plays. John Carroll then committed a movement penalty after a great defensive “stunt” by the Patriots during a 4th down and short. This “stunt” caused John Carroll to punt, or attempt to punt. The snap went over the punter’s head followed by one of the best mental plays by a punter I have seen lately. The John Carroll punter ran the ball into the endzone to take the safety instead of giving the Patriots the ball deep in their own territory. Harmon Gage applied pressure on the play that eliminated any chance of kicking the ball. BJ 12 – JC 7. The Patriots start on the 29 after receiving the kick from the safety. Michael Dean led the team down field with very good use of the clock and with less than 40 seconds left Dean connected with Henry Townsend after a tip from Dominique Fredericks. We missed the extra point. BJ 18 – JC 7. John Carroll started on the 36 after the kickoff with little time left. Neal Bond got a sack on the 1st down play to almost end the half when the Patriot’s made a huge mental mistake on the next play as time expired. A late hit after a John Carroll runner went out of bounds cost the Patriot’s a 15 yard penalty to be assessed at the start of the 3rd quarter.

A delay of game penalty caused by the Homecoming festivities coupled with the penalty from the 1st half put the ball on the 20 to kick off to start the quarter. An off sides call cost the Patriots 5 more. John Carroll received the kick and returned the ball down to the Patriot 35 yard line. On 1st down, John Carroll ran for a touchdown as Coach Mansell said, “we missed 5 tackles.” At 11:44 left, BJ 18 – JC 14, not a good start after halftime. The kickoff was returned to the 30 by Max Martin. Michael Dean didn’t seem to be rattled by the quick score as he threw a 40 yard pass to Chris Cooper on the first play. Max Martin then rambles in for the touchdown. John Carroll could have laid down at this point but managed to mount a drive capped by a 25 yard field goal. BJ 25 – JC 17. The Patriots received the kickoff and returned it to the 41. After a few good running plays, Dean took a sack which put us in a punting situation. Matt Sendral mashed the punt 47 yards into the end zone. John Carroll sputtered on the next offensive possession and punted back to the Patriots. Bob Jones kept the ball to end the quarter. BJ 25 – JC 17.

The Patriot ground game started taking over to open the 4th quarter. A strong run from “Big Back” Rod Matthews followed by a 17 yard touchdown run from Max Martin with 11:27 left made the score 32-17, Bob Jones. After a short kickoff, the second of the 2 bad plays from the Patriot defense happened. We got burnt deep again on a 50 yard pass play. It took only a few plays to stuff it in. BJ 32 – JC 24. Are these guys going to go away? A kickoff return by Max from the 1 to the 30 started the next drive. A roughing the passer penalty provided a big gain to help this drive. Good ball control coaching observed runs by Martin, Dean, Matthews, and finally by Caudle with the 9 yard TD play. A short kickoff went out of bounds, but No return. John Carroll moved the ball down to the Patriot 11 but couldn’t push it in after a good defensive stand. Bob Jones got the ball back after a failed 4th down play and ran it out.

A very good game overall in which the running game seemed to be getting momentum from the Hazel Green game along with better blocking. Early estimates put the rushing yards near 300 with almost 200 of that for Max Martin. Michael Dean continued his excellent quarterback duties completing 11 out of 16 passes for 212 yards with 2 TDs. Hats off to the Offensive Line that aided in both. The defense played very well except for getting burnt deep twice. David Brown continued to be a force and Neal Bond also played well. Matt Sendral punted very well and provided good place kicking effort in Campbell’s absence. By John Parkes
