Buckhorn (22-8-1) 11-10, Bob Jones (15-24) 7-6: The visiting 7A #5 Buckhorn Bucks pulled off the sweep over Bob Jones to eliminate the Patriots from playoff contention. The Patriots finished with 13 runs on 21 hits in two games but it was not enough as the Patriot pitchers struggled to keep Buckhorn off the board as they scored 21 runs on 21 hits.
In game 2 of the series which was played on Friday night, the Bucks struck first with 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 1 in the 3rd to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. The Patriots chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd after James Taylor walked and scored on a double play and Dylan Patel was hit by a pitch and scored on a 2-out double by Dylan Ray. Bob Jones would cut the lead to 4-3 in the 4th inning after Cam Hill singled and scored on an Andrew Gravel 2-out double.
Buckhorn added 3 more runs in the top of the 5th and 2 in the 6th for a 9-3 lead. The Patriots wouldn’t go easily as 3 more runs came across in the bottom of the 6th. Cam Hill doubled to lead off the inning and Dylan Patel reached on an error to put runners at 1st and 3rd. Caden Rose and Connor Daly followed with back to back RBI singles to make the lead 9-5. Dylan Ray followed with another single which scored Caden Rose on a bad throw to the plate to leave the Patriots trailing 9-6 entering the final inning.
The Bucks would once again answer with 2 runs in the 7th inning before the Patriots would score one on a 2-out RBI single by Patel to score Rose who reached on an error.
Five Patriots (Connor Daly, Dylan Ray, Cam Hill, Dylan Patel, and Andrew Gravel) finished with two hits with doubles by Ray, Hill, and Gravel. Caden Rose and Ford Luttrell added singles.
Coleton Barnes suffered the loss allowing 7 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings with 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 3 HBP. John Michael Riley pitched 1 inning in relief allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 1 strikeout. Brendan Bickleman pitched the final 2 innings allowing 2 unearned runs on no hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.
In game 3 on Saturday, the Patriots stormed back from a 5-1 deficit going into the bottom of the 7th inning with four runs to force extra innings before falling 10-6 in 9 innings. Trailing by 4 runs with 3 outs to play, Chase Smith and Kyle Parker reached on consecutive 1-out errors to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Caden Rose then walked to load the bases. Connor Daly followed with a double off the wall to score 2 runs. Dylan Ray followed that up with his own 2 RBI double to tie the game at 5-5. This left runners on 1st and 2nd after an intentional walk. The Bucks wiggled out of it with a double play to force extra innings.
Both teams went quietly in the 8th inning before the Bucks erupted for 5 runs in the top of the 9th innings on 3 hits and 3 walks. Bob Jones added a run in the bottom half of the 9th on a RBI double by Ford Luttrell.
John Michael Riley, Ray, and Luttrell all finished with 2 hits. Mitch Daly, Thomas Mitchell, and C. Daly all added hits.
Ryan Kirby picked up the loss while pitching the final 2 innings and allowing 5 runs on 3 hits with 1 strikeout and 3 walks. Dylan Ray was the starting pitcher and went 1 2/3 innings with 4 runs on 2 hits with 1 strikeout and 4 walks. Cam Hill pitched 4 1/3 innings with no runs on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 1 HBP. Caden Rose pitched the 7th innings with 1 run on 3 hits with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.
Bob Jones returns to play on Tuesday for senior night vs Madison Academy at 6pm before finishing the season with a series with rival James Clemens with a game at home on Thursday at 6pm and a doubleheader Friday at 4pm at James Clemens.
